"Through the development of the Beyond the Noise research project, I aim to improve the sonic quality of urban public spaces and to reduce the harmful effects of noise pollution in Berlin areas affected by environmental injustice. The application of the qualitative methodology based on the “open source soundscape” approach, will result in the protection of existing quiet areas and the planning of new ones at the neighborhood scale, thus improving social interaction and oral communication. There would also be a positive impact on the public’s awareness of the sonic environment, and on the spread of the open-data/open-source movement"

Dr. Radicchi’s main area of expertise encompasses innovative urban design and planning, soundscape research, citizen science and mobile technology. In this regard, her ultimate goal is to design environmentally just and human scale cities.
Dr. Radicchi is a registered architect and she holds a Ph.D. in Urban Design and Territorial Planning, with doctoral studies conducted at MIT (Cambridge, USA) and at the University of Firenze (IT).
From April 2016 to April 2018, Dr. Radicchi was IPODI Marie Curie Fellow at TU Berlin Institute of City & Regional Planning, where she has envisioned and run two innovative soundscape projects, such as the “Hush City” app, a citizen science tool for empowering people to identify, map and evaluate quiet areas worldwide. Dr. Radicchi continues her work at TU Berlin as Principal investigator of the “Hush City Mobile Lab” project, running April 2018-2020, funded by a third-party research grant of the HEAD-Genuit Foundation.
Her research and professional work on soundscape has been widely awarded. Most notably: the HEAD-Genuit research grant to set up the Hush City Mobile Lab at TU Berlin, the IPODI Marie Curie Fellowship, the nomination as Falling Walls Young Innovator of the Year 2016 (finalist), the Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship, and the National Institute of Urbanism Award for the best Italian dissertation in urbanism, then published as a monograph. Her project, Toscana Sound Map, was commissioned for and exhibited at EXPO 2015 in Milan.
While combining professional and research practice, Dr. Radicchi has lectured extensively at the university level for ten years and participated in international conferences and symposiums. Dr. Radicchi also collaborates with the European Commission Executive Research Agency as an external expert evaluator and rapporteur in the framework of HORIZON 2020.

Beyond the Noise: Open Source Soundscapes. Experimenting with a qualitative methodology based on the human voice for the analysis, assessment and planning of urban quiet areas at the neighbourhood scale in Berlin

Abstract: The Beyond the Noise research project focuses on the issue of noise pollution and it aims to apply a qualitative methodology based on the human voice for the analysis, assessment and planning of urban quiet areas at the neighbourhood scale in Berlin.
The methodology is grounded on the “open source soundscape approach”, which implies:
- a new definition of quiet area as one where social interaction and spoken communication are not disturbed; and consequently
- the adoption of human voice as a quanti-qualitative indicator;
- the use of web-based multi-layered maps for the open collection, evaluation and planning of qualitative and quantitative data collected through the pilot study.
The project will be tested through the development of a pilot study in an area affected by environmental injustice in Berlin, and will imply public participation and use of open source tools.
The project has received the support of the Berlin Senate and it will be developed in accordance with the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment.
